E.M.Gopalakrishna Kone Yadava Women’s College, Madurai was founded in the year 1974 by late Thiru.E.M.G. Soundara Rajan as President,being inspired by the philanthropic ideals of Thiru.E.M.Gopalakrishna Kone to provide education for the economically and socially backward women and also to uplift them to a state of dignity through economic prosperity and societal recognition. The motto of the college is ‘Anbum, Arivum, Panbum Yadhavam; Magalir Arivu, Kudumba Uyarvu’- which means “By educating a woman we educate the whole family”.
The college was started only with Pre-University courses at E.M.G.Kalyana Mandabam at Tallakulam, Madurai in 1974. Then the college was shifted to the present campus at New Natham Road, Thiruppalai in a vast area of 15 acres of land donated by E.M.G. Charitable Trust in the year 1980. The college was upgraded as First Grade College in the year 1979 offering undergraduate courses in History, English and Zoology.....
At present the college offers 11 UG courses and 3 PG courses. To enhance the employability of the students 11 job orientated certificate and diploma courses are also offered. As an initial step of upgrading the college as a research centre, the institution is going to offer M.Phil course in Mathematics from the academic year 2009-10. AICTE has approved M.C.A course to be started in the ensuing academic year.
The NAAC Peer Team visited our college in 2003 and accredited the institution with B++ grade. The college became autonomous with CBCS in the year 2006. The various statutory bodies, constituted under autonomy contribute a lot to academic innovations. Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) was introduced in tune with the recommendations of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education in 2008.
At present the college is witnessing further growth under the leadership of Tmt.E.M.G.S.Indirani, President & Secretary, an able administrator and a spiritualist. Her zeal to uphold the ideals of the founders, late Thiru.E.M.Gopalakrishna Kone and his son, Thiru.E.M.G.Soundararajan. Her commitment to promote the tradition of providing quality education to women folk from weaker section of the society, and a vision and mission for a futuristic development is bound to make the blossoming institution as a centre of academic excellence.
